Marymount College FAQs 2012

You've frequently got questions. We've frequently got the answers. If you've got a question you want answered, you can frequently find it in this post.

If it isn't here, it may be in one of our older posts.

If it isn't in one of our older posts, it's probably on our website.

If it isn't on our website, it probably doesn't matter much. But if it's really got you confused, you can always email us here.

Q: What documents are required for my admission?

A: We only require your official high school transcript for admission (and college transcripts from every institution at which you've attempted coursework if you're a transfer student). We'll need an official, sealed and stamped copy before you enroll, but we can make a decision based on an unofficial transcript.

We strongly recommend that you submit:

  • SAT/ACT scores - these are optional, but they might get you out of placement testing. They're never going to hurt you, and they can often help. We don't need an official copy, either, so save the money and just take a screenshot of your CollegeBoard page.
  • A personal statement - A brief one-to-two pages can go a long way toward getting you into college. See our Personal Statement Clinics for tips on how to write a good one.
  • Letter(s) of recommendation - It's always good to confirm that your teachers actually like you. Please only send us academic sources from your most recent school. No neighbors or elementary school principals, please.
Q: How do I submit my transcripts/personal statement/letter(s) of recommendation?

A: This is probably the most frequent of our frequently asked questions (the F in our FAQs as it were). Our application does not allow you to digitally upload your documents. That means that you have to send them to our office. You may do so in any manner you choose: email, snail mail, fax, carrier pigeon, pony express, teleportation through a quantum worm hole, etc. Sadly, we are no longer able to accept smoke signals.

Q: What GPA do I need to get in?

A: We don't list a minimum, and this causes no end of confusion.

There is a method to our madness. We don't state a minimum because "we don't want to preclude ourselves from receiving the applications of qualified students who may have had difficulties in their academic career but nevertheless might be valuable additions to our school."

In other words, we'll look at anyone because we know grades don't always tell the whole story (but they usually do).

Here are some concrete figures to assuage the panic of your left-brain types.
  • 2.5 - Almost all competitive students have a GPA of a 2.5 or higher. If you're below a 2.5, you need a really, really good reason.
  • 2.8 - We start our merit scholarships at a 2.8 academic GPA. If you have a 2.8 or higher with no D's or F's, you're likely to get in. If you're lower than that, or have D's or F's, we'll probably request additional information to ensure that you're prepared for college-level coursework.
  • 3.1 - Our average incoming GPA.
  • 3.7 - We begin our top-level Trustee's scholarships at a 3.7. If you have a 3.7 or higher (by our calculation), you're automatically guaranteed a $12,000 scholarship.
Q: Do I have to tell you if I'm going to do your 2-year or 4-year program?

A: Nope. Well, eventually (we'll probably want to know if you're going to be taking classes here your junior year), but not before admission.

Q: Are any of your programs impacted?

A: Nope. When you apply you're applying to the college, not a program. That means a Pre-Med student and a Business both have the same admission standards. It also means that you getting the classes you need to graduate is a much easier process.

Q: Do you have [the sport I like to play]?

A: Yes, if you play soccer, golf or run cross-country (our NAIA sports). We also have lacrosse as a club sport and dozens of intramural teams.

Q: How do I apply for scholarships?

A: For merit scholarships, you're automatically considered. All you have to do is chill and wait for us to, as they say, show you the money.

Athletic scholarship (both partial and full-tuition) are distributed by our Athletic Department (makes sense) at the discretion of our coaches. If you'd like to have a coach contact you about recruitment (and you play soccer, golf, or run cross-country), fill out our prospective student athlete form here

Fine arts scholarships are distributed at the discretion of our Arts and Media department. You have to apply and send examples of your work. Find more information here

Our Mariner Involvement Award is offered to students who do not qualify for Merit Scholarships but have shown a great deal of involvement and dedication to a cause during high school. You have to apply for this scholarship and write an essay. Click here for the application.

Q: What is the last day I can apply?

A: If the Mayans are right, December 21st, 2012.

Otherwise, it's May 1st. After May 1st we may still read your application, but you'll only be admitted as space permits.

Apply now!

Q: How much does it cost to attend?

A: Tuition: $27,396
    Room and Board: $10,932

Q: Even if I live in California?

A: Yep. We're a private school. We don't care if you live in our staff lounge (actually, we might), you still pay the same tuition.

Q: What's my admission status?

A: If you're the impatient type, you can always call us to ask (But you don't have to. We'll send you a letter either way. We promise), or you can check your VIP page which will give you a checklist of what we still need, what you've already submitted, and your current status. It's both nifty and neat-o.

Q: Are you as awesome as everyone says you are?

A: Awesomer.
